Erasmus Program and Mobility Projects

International Mobility and Erasmus

IMT was conceived as an international research institute and doctoral school, which is further enforced by the fact that all the research and didactic activities (including selection procedures for faculty, students and staff) are carried out in English. IMT boasts in fact a very high percentage of international students and researchers, who all feel perfectly integrated within the IMT campus thanks to its underlying infrastructure and the services offered by the administrative staff.

PhD student mobility

After the first 12 months of the doctoral program, which are dedicated to in-depth study through "in-house" taught courses and seminars, IMT students are encouraged to spend a study, research or traineeship period abroad to further enrich the internationality of the PhD program. The period, which usually lasts from 2 to 9 months, is typically carried out at institutions such as universities or research centers. The period abroad is fully integrated and recognized in the student's records, and students who receive a scholarship will see the monthly amount increased by 50% for the entire period abroad (in accordance with Italian law). There will be two Erasmus+ Calls for the academic year 2019/20:

  • the first call - by the Erasmus Mobility Consortium (formed by the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, the Scuola Normale Superiore and the IMT School itself) - is for traineeship activities and is expected to open in May 2019.
  • the second call - by the IMT only - is both for study and traineeship activities and will open in Autumn 2019.

Erasmus + 2014-2020

Erasmus+ is the new European Union programme for Education, Training, Youth, and Sport. Set to last until 2020, the programme will provide opportunities for over 4 million Europeans to study, train, gain work experience, and volunteer abroad.
The Erasmus + program supports, among other policy objectives, the European modernization and internationalization agenda in higher education, and covers the 7-year period 2014-2020 replacing seven existing programs, including the Lifelong Learning Program (LLP), which ended with the 2013-2014 academic year.
More information about Erasmus + can be found on the the  Italian National Agency and  European Commission websites.

Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE)

IMT has been awarded the  Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE), which is a pre-requisite for higher education institutions to participate in Erasmus +, the new EU program outlined above.
The ECHE is an important award that the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) gives to higher education institutions (HEIs), and provides the general quality framework for European and international cooperation activities a higher education institution may carry out within the Program. The award of an Erasmus Charter for Higher Education is a pre-requisite for participating in learning mobility of individuals and/or cooperation for innovation and good practices under the Program.

Erasmus Policy Statement

The  Erasmus Policy Statement (EPS) sets out IMT overall institutional strategy to fulfill the requirements of the Charter.
